Young People Discussed the Municipality’s Economic Future in the First Public Consultation Session for PEDE 2026–2038
The Braga Youth Centre, together with the InvestBraga team, hosted a participatory session dedicated to young people and the associative movement, as part of the process for developing the new Strategic Plan for the Economic Development of Braga, which will guide the municipality until 2038.
The initiative, moderated by Ernst & Young, enabled the collection of contributions, ideas and concerns from Braga’s young people, reinforcing the commitment of a city that wants to shape the future with young people, and not merely for young people.
“This consultation process reflects a clear strategic vision: we want a more competitive, innovative and sustainable municipality, built with the active participation of the younger generations. Young people are not just recipients of public policies; they are essential partners in defining the economic and social development model we want for Braga by 2038,” highlighted Luís Rodrigues, Executive Board Member of InvestBraga.
The meeting brought together representatives of youth associations, students, and members of local and national associative movements, in a session marked by the sharing of perspectives on topics such as employment, housing, innovation, sustainability, culture and quality of life.
Throughout the session, the importance of creating spaces for active participation became clear, allowing young people to contribute to the definition of the policies and strategies that will shape the development of the territory in the coming years.
According to Pedro Couto Soares, Director of the Braga Youth Centre, “this is a key hub for youth, and hosting this first consultation session confirms what we have long been saying: Braga is a city that values participation, associative movements, and the transformative capacity of young people.”
The session also reinforced the role of youth associations as drivers of social, cultural and civic dynamism, recognising the contribution of associations towards a more participatory, innovative and cohesive community.
The involvement of young people in this process also follows the principles established in the recent revision of the European Charter on the Participation of Young People in Local and Regional Life, valuing youth involvement in decision-making processes and reinforcing the need for continuous, informed and effective participation in the definition of public policies.
It should be noted that the contributions collected will be integrated into the development process of the Strategic Plan for the Economic Development of Braga, a document aimed at strengthening competitiveness, innovation, talent and investment attraction, as well as quality of life across the municipality.
Integrated into the Braga Economy Weeks, this initiative represents another step towards building more participatory public policies, reinforcing proximity to citizens and recognising youth as a central partner in defining the collective path towards the future.
